Boulevard Brewing Company’s Unfiltered Wheat. The most ubiquitous local microbrew in Kansas City. You’ve definitely seen it if you’re in the surrounding 17 states. If you haven’t, you soon will.
The popularity of the hefeweizen-style beers in the past few years has absolutely exploded due to mass-marketed examples such as Blue Moon, New Belgium’s Sunshine Wheat, variations by Sam Adams (Boston Beer Co), etc. Boulevard’s fine example, having been around since the early 1990′s, has been no exception.
They’re excellent with nearly all kinds of food. They’re delicious in any season. They’re an excellent bridge from American light lagers. Try one.
With that, we’ve done our first ‘quick-take’ video review:
This is a solid beer that is always enjoyable, no matter what kind of phase you may be going through. I know too many people who have written not only this beer, but this style, completely off since it has gotten popular – sorta like that kid who listens to music and bands that don’t yet even exist.
Don’t do that.
Alright – so how does the review break down?
- Originality within style (17): So well balanced, yet with all the characteristics that a good hefeweizen should have. The yeast strand reminds me of the belgian variants (wit beers) – a nice compromise between America and Bavaria.
- Nose (15): Not overwhelming. Citrus galore.
- Mouthfeel (18): This baby has some great noise to it without hitting you in the mouth too hard. Plenty of body.
- Character (17): It’s difficult to find such a good wheat – I’ve tried. One starts moving into Belgian trippels after this, and the fun really begins. For the style, this is killer.
- Overall Quality (19): Maybe it has to do with the fact that I’m right next to the brewery, but the consistency is excellent. Best drank out of a glass, not a bottle. Perfect balance of ingredients. They didn’t skimp.
- Total (86): Good year-round, and with pretty much any food you can get your hands on.

Nice job Jameson. Much better video and sound and good opening and closing. Boulevard Wheat is one of my staples. A very tasty beer!
I’m not a beer guy, but I enjoyed the video. Nick work.
