I am sitting at Freestate Brewery for lunch (yes, I am there right now), waiting on the girlfriend, and realized I had not had their rye in quite some time. To be clear, they make several rye beers, including a pretty unique lemongrass variety that is marvelous in the hot summer months. The variety I happen to be drinking is called Blue Sky Rye – a gently-hopped version with notes of toasted pine and a sweet malty base to hold it up. A perfect fall beer.
this beer has some serious character, but is quite likeable even for those who may not be a fan of this particular genre. It is gentle, but interesting, and a perfect compliment to cooling weather and falling leaves.
Frestate does not distribute in bottles quite yet – that’s coming, as they prepare to open their new brewhouse and bottling line. No concrete date yet, but it has been in the works for quite some time now. But if you are lucky enough to be in Kansas City, a trip to the Lawrence-based icon is definitely in order.

94/100 – outstanding, especially with my brisket sandwich.
I apologize for typos – this entire thing was written on my Palm pre.
