So after our beer dinner the other day, Mr Jeffrey Ward and myself had the opportunity to finish up with a smoked porter from O’Fallon just outside of St. Louis. They’ve been churning out some awesome stuff as of late, and this beer was no exception to that. You can find O’Fallon all over Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, and parts of Kentucky, Iowa, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Ohio.
Onto the review:
The Breakdown:
- Originality within style (19): Lovin’ the smoked finish. Subtle but there.
- Nose (16): Smells like whiskey and smoke – pretty much expected.
- Mouthfeel (20): Absolutely killer. Full and well-rounded.
- Character (18): Well put together, but everything is quite understated. Maybe a bit too understated.
- Overall Quality (20): Small batch, hand-crafted. Some thought def went into it.
- Total (93): Decidedly delicious. Savory and approachable.

This is one of those beers that I really want to like, but I’m disappointed with. I picked up one from the latest batch at the O’Fallon tasting at Gomers recently. I find it a little thin, and the whiskey flavor was barely present. That being said, I really like the regular smoked porter, 5-Day IPA, and unlike a lot of beer geeks, I like a Wheach on a hot summer day at the lake. I’m also looking forward to what they will brew now that they have a license to brew higher alcohol beers. A Scotch Ale is on the way IIRC.
