So Boulevard has a new seasonal. Its name? Boss Tom’s Golden Bock. If you’re guessing that this might be the Maibock from the past two years, you might be right. Bottles are a bit more portable than kegs, so Boulevard decided that you should be able to take your Bock with you. And there we have it.
Boss Tom is an allusion to Kansas City’s early 1900′s political boss, Tom Pendergast. A corrupt, but effective mover and shaker in Kansas City during the depression era, Boss Tom commanded both fear and respect. Bock is another name for goat, the symbol of Mr. Pendergast’s political organization, thus the association.
Boulevard was kind enough to send me a couple bottles for review. It should be hitting shelves very soon, as it is meant to fill the gap between Irish Ale and Boulevard’s summer ZŌN seasonal.
Check out the review below:
The Breakdown:
- Originality within style (15): Not all bocks are created equal – this one is perfect for late spring.
- Nose (14): Not a lot there aside from your expected maltiness – some hints of lemongrass.
- Mouthfeel (17): Great mouthfeel – full-bodied lager, but not heavy.
- Character (15): The beer (bock style) is similar to a heavier full-bodied pilsner, and perhaps a bit smoother on the palate.
- Overall Quality (17): Top quality ingredients are evident.
- Total (78): The brew has merit, but is a bit lacking in the ‘wow’ department.

The Slam Rating was great! This was a very interesting post . You used the S**T word, Louie talked about giving beer to high schoolers and you talked about throwing a beer at the camera! All fun!
Well, it took me a week to get through a six of Boss Tom is my first thought.
Second, The name is horrible. Take it from a minority, it gives off hints of Troost Divide and Sharecropping for a swath of people. Unintentional sure, but even knowing why it’s named Boss Tom, every time I just initially see the words my mind absolutely does NOT go to Tom Pendergast.
All that being said, I tried the beer at The Brick, a fine establishment right across from The Kansas City Star HQ on MGee, from the tap. I was astonished by the eloquent taste, in contrast to the bottlebland Pendergast.
